Celebrating Over 100 Years in Business

Lafferty Lumber found its home on the banks of the Susquehanna River and the rails of Pennsylvania Railroad in 1915. The area was strategically located for the lumber trade due to its proximity to vast forests and its position as a transportation hub. The forests surrounding Lemoyne were primarily composed of valuable hardwoods such as oak, hickory, walnut, and cherry, which were in high demand for various industries, including shipbuilding, construction, and furniture making.

Lemoyne, the area that Lafferty chose to make roots, has a rich history in the timber industry. Lemoyne is a borough situated on the western bank of the Susquehanna River, just across from Harrisburg. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the forests of Cumberland County were abundant with timber resources. The region’s proximity to the Susquehanna River made it favorable for transporting logs and finished lumber. Sawmills and other lumber-related businesses began to emerge, catering to the local demand for timber. Lemoyne, being situated along the river, became a convenient location for these lumber operations. Sawmills were established in the area, and the Susquehanna River served as a transportation artery for moving logs and lumber to markets downstream.

Along with the Susquehanna River, the area also had the Pennsylvania Railroad, one of the largest rail networks in the United States, established its

main line through Harrisburg, connecting the city to markets across the country. This significantly increased the reach and scale of the lumber trade, as timber could now be transported quickly and efficiently to distant markets. Lee Norton Lafferty, our founder, saw this opportunity to bring wealth and employment opportunities to Lemoyne, stimulating the local economy.

One notable aspect of Lemoyne’s lumber industry was its connection to the shipbuilding trade. The abundant hardwoods of Cumberland County were sought after for constructing ships, particularly the sturdy oak used for ship frames and planking. Lemoyne, with its access to the Susquehanna River, provided a convenient location for shipping these materials to shipyards in other parts of Pennsylvania and beyond.

As the 19th century progressed, the lumber industry in Lemoyne and Cumberland County expanded in parallel with the growth of the region. The lumber industry in Harrisburg and local areas like Lemoyne faced challenges as the 20th century progressed but Lafferty Lumber was able to endure. The legacy of the industry can still be seen in the architecture of older buildings in the area, some of which may have been constructed using locally sourced timber. The historical significance of the lumber industry in Lemoyne and Cumberland County is preserved through local heritage initiatives and historical preservation efforts.
